Infocomm Club Training

The Infocomm Club programme is an initiative by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). It was kick-started in November 2004. The driving force behind this programme is the need to groom a pool of IT savvy workforce to meet future demands. IDA is ready to pump in $120 million to this programme to reach this goal.

Novell is honoured to be part of the programme and has appointed GSA as its Novell Technical Institute (NTI) to provide academic training to schools. To facilitate the learning process, we have designed different programmes for the primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges. We also customise courses to meet special needs of the students and schools. The focus of the course is on open source technologies and on Linux server administration.

Primary Schools The focus of the course for primary schools is to create a fun environment for students to learn IT skills. Students will get to learn various open source software like OpenOffice Writer for word processing, OpenOffice Impress for project presentation, GIMP for image editing and many more. Included in the programme are excursions, group work and fun activities worth waiting for!

Secondary Schools can mix and match the various modules that we offer. Modules like “SUSE Linux Server Administration”, “Get Ready for Open Source”, 3D snimation, video/sound effect production and Web publishing are available for selection. Students will learn about the history of Linux, networking and remote access from the "SUSE Linux Server Administrator" module. From the web publishing course, they will learn to create a website using a myriad of open source software. Students can flaunt their creativity through the 3D animation course and video/sound Effects Production course.

Our lessons are designed as a minimum 30 sessions course for the whole year. Each session is two hours long. For costing figures for both open source applications and robotics training, please refer to the table below:

Duration: 30 sessions x 2 hours

Cost: S$120.00 per hour

Schools who wish to have a try at open source applications and training can opt for infocomm enrichment courses. The applications offered are the same as those offered in the Infocomm Club. Usually schools who take up such enrichment programmes request for some sort of customisation on the courses so as to achieve specific goals they have for the students.

Duration: Depends on course

Cost: S$10 per student per session of 3 hours

The bulk of our open source application training covers the following software: * GIMP * Inkscape * Art of Illusion * Wax * Audacity
